Insectoid

June 5th, 2011

Iowa City band Insectoid, described on their Facebook page as being a “rock-synthe-funk-tronic sci-fi themed multimedia rock band,” played two shows in Iowa City in April and I was there to shoot both of them.  The first was at the Iowa City Yacht Club, where they performed with Dead Larry as part of the 4*20 show, and two days later they rocked the wonderfully grimy bar Gabe’s as they opened for Wookiefood.  Here’s a sampling from both shows.

bloody fun self-portraiture

April 14th, 2011

let me be up front with you: i am not a fan of self portraits.  there are so many amazing things to photograph in this world and i could never understand the appeal of just taking photos of yourself (besides wanting attention).  that said, sometimes i do self portraits because i get an idea that i must enact immediately and don’t have a model to play with.  that’s what happened here.  one sunday i said, “i want to smear fake blood on myself and take pictures!”  so i did.  this one is my favorite.  i really enjoy the look on my face, and, as one friend put it, i have a slight jessica hamby (from TRUE BLOOD) vibe going on: innocent but savage.

the carolina chocolate drops at the hilltop tavern

April 7th, 2011

every tuesday, my neighborhood bar (the HILLTOP!) has an old timey music night.  i’ve been meaning to attend for months in hopes of picking up some tips on the banjo, but always either a) forget, b) am busy, or c) am lazy.  this tuesday, however, i made a point to mosey on up because the CAROLINA CHOCOLATE DROPS were participating in the old timey music jam!  the CHOCOLATE DROPS are one of my favorite new bands from the last year.  i had the pleasure of seeing them perform in monmouth, IL, last october and thanks to a high school friend who was volunteering at the festival, i got to go backstage and meet them.

this week at the hilltop, the place was packed so my friends and i went outside and stood near the emergency exit, which was open (probably due to some fire code rule).  the CHOCOLATE DROPS had set up right by the door so our spot was perfect.  i stood and looked over dom flemons’ shoulder as he played, and had a nice chat with the new member, hubby jenkins, outside as we both enjoyed the evening.  old timey music filled the air and i snapped a few photos and i can’t think of a better tuesday i’ve ever had.

Dom Flemons (vocals, 4-string banjo, guitar, jug, harmonica, kazoo, snare drum, bones).

Rhiannon Giddens at left (vocals, 5-string banjo, fiddle, kazoo) with various musicians.

BURLESQUE!

March 29th, 2011

it may seem as though i’ve been out of commission for a while, which is partly true.  after christmas i made a vow to myself that i would take some time off, which is exactly what i did.  then in january, i journeyed to salt lake city, utah, to photograph my best friend of 20 year’s dog, who was diagnosed last year with bone cancer.  it was a fantastic trip.  i saw eight mormon weddings in temple square on the same day, went snowshoeing, visited park city one week before the sundance film festival, tried african food for the first time, and shot a gun.  i even managed, between all that, to get some great shots of the wonderful ares, a very handsome and equally sweet anatolian shepherd.

after my trip i continued to slack, and yea, it was good.

then all of a sudden i was back to WORK!

i just completed a four-day session with poet and musician monadnoc, documenting the birth of his new album at flat black studios in iowa city.  but that’s not what i want to share today.  i also did a shoot with Les Dames du Burlesque d’ Iowa City, our local burlesque troupe of luscious ladies.  i’ll be sharing photos this week on Facebook so hop on over and take a gander.  i promise your peepers won’t be disappointed.

want more?  you’ve got two options.

OPTION 1) go to my DEWEY STREET PHOTO COMPANY FACEBOOK PAGE and watch for updates this week.  do you “like” us?  you should.  we’re pretty cool.

OPTION 2) catch Les Dames at the Blue Moose Tap House on thursday, march 31 at 11pm, with HOTT and Liberty Leg!

5th Annual Iowa City Zombie March

October 24th, 2010

September 28, 1010 | Iowa City, IA

The rain didn’t stop the zombies from descending upon Iowa City this year!  As both the official photographer and a sponsor for the 2010 march, I braved the wet weather, mud, and chilly temps to chronicle the living dead’s trek from Happy Hollow Park to downtown Iowa City.

I even made a special shirt to wear.  Here I am!

And now, the zombies…
