ABOUT DAWN
The Dewey Street Photo Company was created and is owned by Dawn Frary, an award-winning Iowa City photographer. Dawn’s work speaks for itself, but it has been described by others as “haunting,” “stunning,” and “creative on an epic level.” “She’s got a great eye for composition and telling a story with images,” said a publisher for Little Village Magazine. Nature photographer AJ Harrison said, “Dawn has the photographic vision that most photographers wish they had. It’s something that’s hard to explain and impossible to teach.”
Dawn graduated from the University of Iowa in 2003 with a BA in English. She lives in a haunted house in a historic Iowa City neighborhood (near the infamous Black Angel of Oakland Cemetery) with her woodworker beau and their cats: Oliver, Chippy, and Henry.
In her spare time, Dawn volunteers as an owl feeder , wildlife rehabilitator, and trainer at the Macbride Raptor Project, an organization that cares for injured birds of prey.
For weddings, Dawn is joined by her longtime friend Tara of Wicked Licorice Photography, based in LaSalle, IL. Dawn and Tara were ballerinas together as children. They like tattoos, owls, and Edgar Allen Poe.
DAWN ON STYLE
I am unconventional. I like weird things, I have tattoos, and I am bored by the mainstream. I am interested in meeting and photographing clients who share my love and appreciation of the weird and the offbeat. I am inspired by fine art, film photography and vintage cameras, abstract vision, cinematography, and conceptual ideas. If you are seeking a photographer to generically document your wedding | family | lifestyle | event, I thank you for your time but advise you to please look elsewhere.
How would I describe my work? Dreamy. Surreal, yet organic. Elegantly offbeat. Straddling the fence between reality and fantasy. Ideally, a little bit weird and dark and lot magical and whimsical and awesome.
The DSPC prides itself on thinking outside of the box and breathing new life into commonplace ideas of what a photographer can do. Some photographers do it for the money. I do it for the beauty, the ritual, and the art.
Booking the DSPC for your portrait session, wedding, event, or any other activity guarantees the creation of something beyond just a photograph.
You will get a statement.
You will get a work of art.
