Testimonial – Reader’s Choice poll

April 18th, 2012

What a SWEET AND BEAUTIFUL testimonial from my friend Bridget in Salt Lake City!  This was pulled from the Iowa City Patch Reader’s Poll for favorite Iowa City photographer:

“After my fiance’s dog, Ares, received a diagnosis of bone cancer last year, I knew Dawn from Dewey Street Photo Company had to be the one to take “Farewell, Ares” photos, so I flew her to Utah for the session. Yup, I chose to fly in a photographer from halfway across the country instead of choosin…g one of the many talented Salt Lake City photographers for the task. It was one of the best decisions I ever made. Though Ares has left us, we’ll always have the stunningly beautiful images Dawn captured of him. Make no mistake, these aren’t your standard pet photos; these are pieces of art that happen to have a dog in them. My vote is ALWAYS with DSPC!”

Please vote for the DSPC!

Offbeat Home feature

March 19th, 2012

I got some love from Offbeat Bride a while back, and this week I am feeling it from their sister site, Offbeat Home as well!  My living room and photo thereof are featured on their site today.  Check it out!

A triumverate of web-awesomeness!

February 29th, 2012

I have had a great couple of days for web exposure so far this week.  Yesterday my photo from the University of Iowa Main Library was featured as the photo of the day on Analogue Sunrise.  I just discovered the site over the weekend, submitted a few photos, and BAM!  There I am!  If you’re into film, check out the rest of the photos.  I fell in love with it pretty fast.

Then today a client-turned-friend alerted me to the fact that one of their wedding photos was featured on not one but TWO sites: Offbeat Bride and Book Riot.  The Offbeat Bride photo was actually posted in April 2011, but I just found out about it today (!).

I am feeling the love, friends.  I am feeling it hardcore.

Remembering the Red Avocado

February 8th, 2012

I shot a photo essay for the February 2012 issue of Little Village, Iowa City’s news and culture magazine, about the recent closure of the Red Avocado, a local organic vegan/vegetarian/locavore restaurant.  It’s been a while since I’ve contributed anything substantial to the magazine, and it feels good to be back (especially on the cover).

Check out the piece by LV writer Stephanie Catlett and myself on Iowa City’s requiem for the Red Avocado.

Snowy Owl

February 3rd, 2012

I’ve volunteered as an owl feeder and wildlife rehabilitator at the Macbride Raptor Project since 2006, and last night I had the pleasure of meeting my first snowy owl.  She is in temporary residence in our flight cage, and will soon be heading back north.  She was a DREAM.

new year / new blog

January 10th, 2012

in an attempt to feature more of my film photography (as opposed to digital, which i shoot professionally), i started a blog to showcase my non-digital work.  i am falling out of love with digital photography and am making a point to get back to my film roots in 2012.  i was resistant to digital cameras until an old boyfriend bought me one for a college graduation gift (and even then i was kind of annoyed that he got it for me after i said i didn’t want one) and that same defiance is rearing its head once again.

down with digital!  up with film!

Offbeat Bride feature!

October 31st, 2011

I got an unexpected feature on Offbeat Bride’s Horror Halloween Monday Montage today!  The featured photo is from the engagement session I did with my old friend Tara (of Wicked Licorice Photography, who works with me on weddings) and her fiance Jeremiah back in July*.   It was an epic, EPIC shoot that lasted 2 days and covered a large portion of Eastern Iowa: cemeteries, bookstores, lakes, woods, and my living room.  Enjoy, and Happy Halloween!

*Yes, I know I haven’t posted any actual photos from that yet, but I’m working on getting updates posted since I couldn’t log-in for several months thanks to some shady behind-the-scenes issues.

Musical Inspiration

October 13th, 2011

Due to some technical difficulties, I wasn’t able to log-in to make updates for a looooooong time.  But now I can!  And I am!  And as you might have noticed, the DSPC site is back with a new look.

One of  my favorite things to do is throw on my headphones (big puffy professional-style beasts!), sit in the dark with my computer (and most likely a cat on my lap), and work on photos.  I cannot do this without music, and I find that what I listen to heavily (and obviously) influences my editing style.  As we are upon the Season of the Witch, my musical tendencies of late have pointed toward the dark side.  On my “frequently played” list right now are The Black Angels, The Dead Weather, The Kills, Salem, Trailer Bride, The Cave Singers, Florence + the Machine, Nine Inch Nails, Marissa Nadler, Matthew Dear, and Charlotte Gainsborough.  I think these musical influences are evident in my most recent series of photos.

And let me just say that I simply cannot get enough of The Black Angels right now.  They are so good.

Blessed be, friends.

Punk Rock Toddler

June 5th, 2011

On May 7 I took a drive over to Bradley, IL, to visit my friend Chrissy and take some photos of her 2 year old son, Holden.  It was a fantastic time!
